POPULAR TRIBUTE TO JACK JOHNSON COMES TO TONI’S PLACE IN PE
Featuring Wayne Kallis & the Not The Jack Johson band
Centrestage brings the music of legendary surfer and film-maker turned cult musician, Jack Johnson, to TONI'S PLACE, (69 Mangold St, Newton Park) for one weekend only on the 12th and 13th of February.
It’ll be the first time Centrestage will be using this intimate dinner-theatre style venue.
The Jack Jonson tribute show is fronted by long time fan and sound alike Wayne Kallis and is performed by the “Not the Jack Johnson Band”, which comprises of the Centrestage All-Star band rhythm section of Gino Fabbri on drums and Mike McCaully on Bass, with John Dickin on percussion.
Johnsons laid-back, feel-good, surf-inspired music, described as “sultry lazy blues with a modern rock twist”, has developed a huge faction following. His latest album “Sleeping through the static” recently sold 92000 copies and also reached the top 10 on the Uk charts.
A Tribute to Jack Johnson plays against an audio-visual Hawaiian surfing beach sunset backdrop and features selections from Jack Johnsons' famous albums On and On, In Between Dreams, Brushfire Fairytales and of course Sleeping Through The Static, all lovingly recreated by the band.
The show represents a complete change in energy and direction for Centrestage’s Wayne Kallis, who trades the high energy exuberance of his Magnificent 7, Creedence Clearwater Revival and recent 80’s Glory days performances, for the gentle melodies of Jack Johnson. The production has been revamped and updated since its first inception in 2007 and crowds can be sure to enjoy an evening of soothing sultry sounds.
Kallis Says “Jack Johnson is forever playing in the background while we are on tour and this is where the idea of doing the tribute was first born. We talked (Centrestage owner) Gary Hemmings into allowing us to do the show as an indulgent pat on the back for the successes of our other more commercial shows – and surprised everybody by creating a show which has in itself developed its own audience”.
The show starts at 8pm and Ticket prices start from R50.00 for the two shows and can be purchased at Toni’s Place or pre - booked by calling 041 3641964.
The Hawaiin-born musician has an enormous student following – one of his famous albums "In Between Dreams" has surpassed the one million sales mark in the UK.
