the artists
The highly likeable, quick-witted and extremely funny Gino Fabbri is a comedian, singer, impersonator, master of accents, quick-witted master of ceremonies, voice-over artist, zany cabaret performer and drummer extraordinaire.
Bringing out the funny side of life through his many hilarious characters, Gino moves from stand-up comedy to cabaret performer to dance party instigator with equal impact.
Performing at least 20 different Centrestage shows, as solo MC, adding comedy slots thoughout an evening and in various Centrestage backing track cabaret and party lineups – and as drummer and front-man for the Centrestage All-Star band.
Gino has both the wit and experience to handle any audience. He also appears regularly in various guises on Algoa FM.
As zany MC in character, Gino assists in breaking down the formality of proceedings by immediately invigorating functions with his infectious sense of fun. If Gino is involved, anything can happen and even the most boring of programs is livened up with his irreverent comedy.
Gino is often added to Centrestage lineups to add the comedy elements - as a singer he goes right into the audience, invites participation and ensures variety and plenty of laughs.
So it is that fake Latin Lover Minuto Peniso woos the ladies (or at least he thinks he does) and Bookie and Bollywood Talent Scout Rancid Punjabi teaches the audience to do the Bangra.
Rear Admiral Winifred Rump is as British as ever until he has had a few toots, Lejeandrevonne Rensburg is a highly incompetent and camp failed events co-ordinator, Austin Powers is ever the ladies man, Gotisa Whiti is a pale SA equivalent of Ali G and Summurai Warrior Yakimoto Katyorarmi battles with his aggression issues.
GinoThe characters sing songs which invariably gets the audience clapping and joining in, as in the case of Russian defector Vladimir Kockoff, who teaches the audience how to do the Kossak dance, whether they like it or not!
In the realm of stand-up comedy, Gino uses sporting characters such as the extremely intelligently challenged and critically stage-fright-struck rugby player Elvis Kroukamp, who finds himself having to deliver an unprepared talk on the parallels between life and rugby, to bring the house down every time.
Gino is also much loved and extremely effective for ladies functions, where his unthreatening, likeable persona's always prove to be a hit.
Gino started his move from drummer to comedian when he headed up the Centrestage Austin Powers spoof Awesome Powers: For Your Thighs Only - where he also played the dual role of ladies man Awesome Powers and megalomaniac Dr Evil.
Fabbri's spot-on comic timing, natural sense of humour and knack for comedic portrayal were unanimously praised by critics.
Fabbri then fronted the popular That Rollicking Rock n Roll show (backing tracks version), again playing fun musical comedy characters - taking the mickey out of Tom Jones, Elvis Presley, David Kramer and Mick Jagger, amongst others.
Gino then teamed up with the sexy Tara-Jane Metzler, to form a very popular musical comedy duo. Gino and Tara perform both the cabaret show and the dance section of the entertainment at corporate functions throughout the country.
In the Centrestage musical murder mystery spoof The Unusual Suspects, he effortlessly introduced a range of personalities and characters and swapped costumes and personas in the blink of an eye. Here they were joined by theatre stalward Clifford Klebb to take off the Mickey Spillaine style of detective movies.
Gino and Tara's The Libido Loco Roadshow poked fun at the nature of consumerism and the gimmicks and delusions that are employed to market products in a product-launch in which everything goes disastrously wrong. This particular show can be adapted as a unique and refreshing way to launch a product.
Gino is joined by leggy diva Donna Africa in Toast!, which places the focus squarely on Fabbri’s stand-up comedy characters.
This show features self-referencing psychologist, Reginald Snead, who is all to quick to banish the Hippocratic oath in favour of sharing a good story about one of his patients!
Lentil Visagie is a self-styled hippy who inadvertently lets his real his feelings on vegetarianism, tree-hugging and global warming slip.
But it is the failed Supersterre contestant and pop-star wannabe, the woefully under-endowed in the talent department, Ruan Hollywood, who steals the show. Ruan, whose world is tragically small, deals with his self-esteem and parental issues as he plays a buckled toaster with a pair of forks, sharing the minutia of his small-town trip down the road to fame.
Gino’s characters share an inability to accurately perceive exactly what is going on around them, all the while trying to compensate for their short-comings. In doing so, hilarious consequences ensue as Fabbri moves from naughty stand-up comedian to quirky singer.
Fabbri does not only have great comedy timing, but he is also the drummer for the popular Centrestage All-Star Band.
His likeable comedic characters have long endeared themselves to the band’s audiences, where he has simultaneously performed the traditional interval comedy spot at shows such as The Magnificent 7 and Tributes to Queen, CCR and Elvis, often garnering the greatest applause of the evening with his crazy, irreverent humour.
“Hiding behind the guise of a dysfunctional persona grants one an enormous amount of licence!”, says Fabbri.
“I regularly get to say what I have always wanted to – often exactly what everyone is thinking, but what they are too polite to say out aloud. Rancid Punjabi, my Indian sports-betting and Bollywood character, is particularly good at putting his foot in his mouth, as he has a habit of expressing his internal monologue without considering the social appropriateness there-of”, laughs Fabbri.
Gino is in high demand in the corporate arena as MC for functions.
“The characters are a great anti-dote to formality”, says Fabbri.
“By having these crazy, larger than life personas handle the boring bits in a function, we show that we are not taking ourselves too seriously – people relax and the fun starts sooner. It is also a great way to turn function-killers like prize givings and awards ceremonies into entertainment highlights rather than obligations. I thrive on the licence this gives me to throw things out off the cuff”, he continues, “my characters are consistently growing as a result”.
As an entertainer, Gino is generous and talented and always leaves an audience wanting more!
