The mother of all rock n roll parties will be staged at the Boardwalk's Cell C Amphitheatre at the end of March as the music of one of the most popular bands of all time, Creedence Clearwater Revival, is given the Centrestage All-Star Band treatment.
Presented by Centrestage in association with the Boardwalk and
Algoa Fm, the Creedence tribute is once again musically directed by
Donovan Hattingh.
Entitled "Hey Tonite!", the show takes in some 36 Creedence hits which are all well known tunes guaranteed to get the audience into a rock n roll frenzy.
"The Cell C Amphitheatre offers an electric atmosphere like no other venue in Port Elizabeth", says Centrestage owner Gary Hemmings.
"The Boardwalk venue is a humdinger when it is packed - our opening shows of
The Magnificent 7 in January were some of the most exciting shows we have done -nothing beats the thrill of performing to 700 people who are sitting almost on top of the band - the guys cannot wait to unleash Creedence on the crowd!"
"I truly believe that this particular show is going to be a party like never before", he continued.
"Every night without fail, when the Creedence segment came around in
The Magnificent 7, the place went wild - 15 000 people let their hair down as never before!", Hemmings enthused.
Featuring the same core band which broke attendance records with their back to back hit shows
Absolutely Abba and
The Magnificent 7, this show promises to take the winning Centrestage entertainment formula another step further as audiovisual elements are added.
"The introduction of intelligent lighting and big screens on either side of the stage which will show close-ups of the entertainment on-screen will add another interesting dimension".
"The front-man for the band,
Wayne Kallis, has such a perfect gravelly voice and dynamic stage energy which echoes the raw Fogarty Creedence 'garage band' sound so very well".
"The Centrestage All-Star band is one of the tightest in the country - we have
Gino Fabbri on drums,
Mike McCaully on bass,
Rory McClaren on keys, guitar and percussion and
Donovan Hattingh on lead guitar - with Kallis on musical steroids up front!"
Also in the mix once again is
Clifford Klebb, who has some surprises in store for his unsuspecting audience as he brings a new and even more zany, completely different MC character "to the nostalgia party". Klebb follows up on his acclaimed role as the rock n roll evangelist Funk McMiracle, also in
The Magnificent 7.
With so many beloved hits to showcase, a spirited band to perform them, a sense of nostalgia in the air and an audience who can't wait to party, Hey Tonight! just cannot go wrong.
Travelling Band, Down on the Corner, Suzi Q, Heard It Through the Grapevine, Born on the Bayou, Up Around the Bend, Proud Mary, Bad Moon Rising and Have You Ever Seen the Rain are but a few of the Creedence songs included which have all become household favourites.
A look at CCR's country roots will include the likes of Cotton Fields,
Looking Out My Back Door, Jambalaya and Lodi, while their protest songs such as
Fortunate Son, Run Through the Jungle and Who'll Stop the Rain are also included.
John Fogarty fans will be pleased to see the inclusion of some of his solo hits such as Old Man Down the Road, Rock n Roll Girls and the Status Quo hit, Rocking All Over the World, which was originally written by the CCR frontman.
